"American Born Chinese" by Gene Yang has been nominated for the National Book Award in children's literature. This is a wonderful book, published by First Second, that ties 3 stories together - the Monkey King, growing up Asian in America and a lot of nasty stereotypes about Chinese people.
Here's an interview with the author by Sunyoung Lee in Publisher's Weekly Comics Week. Read his comments on being nominated on First Second's blog.
This is the first time a graphic novel has been nominated for the National Book Award in any category. By the way, the author teaches computer science in high school, and has developed some great interactive comix online to teach algebra- I wish I had done these.
