Beach Volleyball- Will It Ever End?

Why does beach volleyball get more coverage than any other sport in the Olympics? (why am I asking?) And why does it go on and on- will it ever end? The massive number of swimming events are over, and yet there are still more beach volleyball games.

Heidi MacDonald, Calvin's co-editor of PW Comics Week, posted on her blog The Beat about the rise of beach volleyball and sad demise of women's softball in the Olympics.

Beijing Olympics

So what did everyone think about the opening ceremonies of the Beijing Olympics? The Times did an article about director Zhang Zimou and how he has transformed from a renegade director of movies critical of the government into the government sanctioned director of the opening ceremonies of the Olympiad. Well, you can certainly expect spectacle from the director of Hero and he did deliver.

Calvin and I were visiting his Mom in DC and we all watched Friday night. I always find these ceremonies corny but fascinating and kind of moving, and this one was no exception. I loved seeing Yao Ming walking with the tiny kid who survived the Szechuan earthquake, (though on a cynical note, it did remind me of the Apple commercial with Yao and Mini-me from a couple of years back.)

I also think it is interesting to see how a lot of commercials on American TV during the Olympics are clearly aimed at the Chinese market. These Olympics are marketing China to the rest of the world, and the rest of the world is marketing their products and services back to China.

Charles Barkley on the Election

CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer interviewed Barkley at the NBA All-Star game last week. Read the transcript- you have to go down a bit on the page, there's a bunch of other stuff before they get to the interview of the Round Mound of Rebound. I was glad to find out that Barkley is not the Republican he claimed to be a few years ago.

Go Big Blue!

The ticker tape parade for the Giants was very close to my job- it was fun to see all the fans, though I was a little late to see Eli, Michael, Osi and Plaxico.

Puppy Bowl!

If you can't bear football, you might want to watch the Puppy Bowl instead.

We will be watching the Super Bowl in my house- go Big Blue. But I might record the Puppy Bowl for later viewing.

Whackers!

Last weekend Calvin's Sunday morning softball team had their yearly barbecue. Eric and I went, we even got to see a couple of innings of a game. Since the games start at 8:30 on Sunday morning, I don't go to many.
