Don't Ask Me Why

but this morning I was able to turn on my iBook using Neilson's battery. I don't know if this is a long-term development, so I immediately backed up everything that hadn't already been backed up. I am happy.

Not sure if you've looked at any of this, but various MAC forums imply that the MAC power management units (i.e. software) sometimes go south and need an explicit reset.

Here's one link

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1431?viewlocale=en_US

and if you just Google "MACBOOK won't power up" you will find more links to similar articles.

The other issue might be the power adapter itself. These too go south sometimes. Some combination of weak power adapter/weak batter could corrupt the power unit, so if you do reset, you might want to borrow Neilson's power adapter and then serially test the adapters and batteries to see which combination is the most stable.

In any case, it's great that you got it powered up one more time and now have a full backup.
